MEET LATOYA MAYBERRY
RUNNING TO GIVE PARENTS A VOICE, IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES AND RETAIN EXPERIENCED TEACHERS.
LaToya is a mom first. She is not a business owner running for the school board. She is a mom who is stepping up because parents deserve to be heard. Parents, children, teachers and staff need to know someone will listen. She wants to hear their stories and be an advocate for children, parents, and teachers.
FAMILY & COMMUNITY
Mayberry was born in Midland and graduated from Midland High School. Her husband, Edward, graduated from Lee High School. They raised their two daughters in Midland. Aniyah is a sophomore at Midland College, where she plays basketball, and Erinn is a senior at Lee High School and also plays basketball. Latoya and Edward have pastored Community Worship Center for 13 years.
The Mayberrys are part of a rotation of local pastors who speak at a luncheon hosted by First Presbyterian Church for Midland High School teachers and administrators. They encourage the teachers, thank them for their service, and remind them that their work does not go unnoticed.
EXPERIENCED LEADERSHIP
Mayberry is a small business owner known throughout Midland for her leadership and service to families through early childhood education, ministry and civic involvement. She owns and operates Toya’s Precious Jewels Academy and has worked in early childhood education for 17 years.
She was recently elected to the Midland Chamber of Commerce Board, is actively serving with the Texas Workforce board on her second term as the first Childcare representative to serve after HB 1615 was passed in 2023, is a commissioner for the Midland Housing Authority, and is active with the Childcare Coalition and Early Matters Permian Basin.
During the 2025 legislative session, Mayberry testified before Texas House and Senate committees in support of SB 462, legislation giving childcare workers priority in receiving childcare scholarships for their own children. In her testimony, she spoke about the difficulty childcare providers face in retaining employees when those workers cannot secure reliable care for their own families.
LATOYA'S APPROACH
ENGAGE PARENTS AND EDUCATORS
Mayberry’s years working directly with children, parents and educators have taught her that the people closest to the work often have the clearest understanding of what needs to change. In her childcare center, she refers to those employees as the proximity experts. She asks them to identify problems, listens to their recommendations and makes changes based on what they see each day. She will bring that same approach to the Midland ISD Board of Trustees.
ATTRACT GOOD TEACHERS
ACCOUNTABILITY
STUDENT OUTCOMES
Mayberry wants more children to enter kindergarten ready to learn and continue meeting grade-level expectations. Too many children are reaching first and second grade without the reading skills they need, and those gaps must be addressed earlier.
Mayberry wants the district to communicate more clearly with parents and taxpayers about where money is being spent, why decisions are made and how those decisions affect students. The district must listen to parents, teachers and staff, explain the reasons behind its decisions and find a way to bring people with opposing views together.
She believes Midland ISD cannot improve student outcomes without retaining experienced teachers. Midland ISD cannot do anything without good teachers and teachers of tenure. The district cannot have them walking away. It must find a way to retain the teachers it has and make their work environment better. Teachers need to feel heard, validated, and supported.
